Lubricants are the lifeblood of any machine, and in any given machine a lubricant performs multiple functions. The primary role of a lubricant is to make things run smoother – to lubricate. Precise manufacturing is the result of well-running, precision-built machinery, and grease plays a major role in keeping that machinery operating at peak levels. However, grease is often misunderstood and, worse, misapplied.

Grease is a solid to semi-fluid substance consisting of a thickening agent combined with a liquid lubricant. Grease is typically characterized by its thickening agent. Soap-thickened greases include lithium, lithium complex, aluminum complex, calcium, calcium complex, calcium sulfonate, sodium and barium. Non-soap greases include organo-clay, polyuria and silica. Thickeners make up 3-30-percent of a grease compound.

When machining with water-soluble coolants, maintaining coolant stability is essential to produce quality parts and surface finish. Therefore, it is important to mix the coolant properly. 

Water-soluble coolants consist of both an oil phase (nonpolar) and a water phase (polar). These phases are extremely dissimilar, so they tend to separate from one another. Hence, emulsifiers are an important component in the coolant concentrate. Emulsifiers are molecules that consist of both polar and nonpolar sides, which help bring the two phases together.

Water plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of a metalworking coolant. Water makes up roughly 95% of the resulting dilution, so its chemical state has a great influence on how well the concentrate mixes and forms a stable emulsion.

If water quality is poor, a wealth of issues can develop. These issues include corrosion, poor machining performance, and water spotting on finished parts. Testing water quality is the first step to ensuring proper performance.

Foam in a metalworking fluid  system is unconducive to the machining process. First and foremost, air does not provide lubricity or cooling to the workpiece. Additionally, air entrainment can promote premature pump failure and create spills - both of which generate significant downtime. Determining the source of a foam issue can ultimately fix the problem and relieve the headaches in the workplace.

A clean metalworking fluid system provides better machining, surface finish, and tool life than a dirty system. Metal fines, bacteria, and tramp oil are all problems that can escalate over time, each of these can warrant a cleanout.

Sometimes a cleanout is inevitable, but proper coolant maintenance can help prolong sump life. Before a system is cleaned out, a sample should be sent to the Lube-Tech lab to determine the potential mode of failure.

Some fluids utilized in the manufacturing industry are water-dilutable coolants, which are oil-in-water dilutions used for machining. Coolants must operate within a specific concentration window to maintain the right amount of lubricity and additive content.

Refractometers are instruments used to obtain a °Brix reading, which measures the oil content present in a coolant mixture. Additionally, each coolant refracts light differently and therefore has its own specific multiplier, called a refractometer factor. The °Brix reading can be multiplied by the coolant’s refractometer factor to determine the coolant concentration.

More than half of bearing failures are the result of improper lubrication. Increasing fuel economy and emissions standards continue to drive automotive technologies, and those technologies are placing higher loads and demands on lubricants. OEMs are demanding engine oils that assist them in meeting fuel economy and emissions requirements while protecting engines through the life of the vehicle. Idle stop, low-speed pre-ignition and turbocharged engines are just a few of the protection challenges in front of modern automotive engine oils.

The pending ILSAC GF-6 engine oil specification is intended to address the issues arising from emerging technologies. However, with timing getting pushed out to 2019 or 2020, API updated its SN rating, releasing the SN Plus oil classification as a stop gap.
